The COVID-19 pandemic has put Britain’s domiciliary care workers and the service they provide in the spotlight in a way never seen before, but for those familiar with the sector, it comes as no surprise.
A recent report by social care standards organisation Skills for Care revealed that, for the first time, the domiciliary care sector, where service users remain in their own homes and have visits by care workers, has overtaken the residential sector.
In times of frailty or vulnerability, when people start to depend on care services, the opportunity to remain in their own homes can have a huge impact on their mental and physical health, and make a potentially upsetting experience a lot less worrisome for all involved.
At Extra Hands, we have been playing our part for more than two decades, helping service users across Norfolk enjoy a good quality of life in the security of their own homes, whilst safe in the knowledge that they will have regular visits from our highly trained and qualified staff to check on their welfare.
The growth in demand for our services reflects the wider growth in demand for the industry, and our experienced staff offer the highest standards of care. We offer a full range of services, from regular wellbeing health checks to holiday care cover, and specialist dementia and physical disability care.
During the pandemic, some families have not been able to visit one another, so daily visits and checks from our care workers have seen them become surrogate families, providing psychological support and care as well as checking on service users’ health.
The words of our satisfied customers prove what a valuable role we play in their lives, and also the lives of their loved ones.
“I’ve been responsible for my brother-in-law since my sister died three years ago but he’s 94 and lives 25 miles away, so I can’t get to him too often,” said Barbara Amishaw. “I couldn’t wish for him to be in better hands than Extra Hands. They’ve been absolutely excellent in every aspect of his care. “As well as looking after him, they’ve also made my life so much easier because I know I don’t have to worry about how he is.”
In the words of our director of care Jo Tier, “Everything we do here is about the individuals we deal with. Making them happy makes us happy.
It’s about recognising the little things that make a big difference.“When I talk to potential new customers, I know that I’m not just going to tell them about what services we can show them in a brochure, but the little extras touches that we make too, that will enrich users’ lives.”
