Here at Extra Hands, we know just how much difference the work of our carers makes to our service users.
It’s not just that they do their jobs well, it’s about the big difference that little acts of help and extra care can make to the quality of their lives, above and beyond the call of duty.
That’s why we set up the GEM awards, to give service users a chance to nominate those people who they think have gone the extra mile to make them feel safe, secure and looked after.
The latest winners are Tamara Proctor, from the Heacham office, and Linda Hall from our Broadlands team.
Tamara is a former winner of the Rising Star award, having switched from a career in retail to enter the care sector, and as her nomination shows, it was a move to which she was perfectly suited.
“My mum was in a dreadful dementia-induced muddle and for some reason had gone back to bed after the breakfast carer had left, and managed to lose her careline button bracelet and became extremely distressed and upset,” said the nomination.
“I live two hours away, so there wasn’t anything I could do, so I rang the office who got hold of her next carer, Tamara, and asked her to ring me when she arrived at mum’s. I was able to direct her to where there was a spare careline button was, and Tamara tested it was working and put it on mum.
“She helped tidy up the bedroom which was messy from where mum had been looking for the button, cooked her supper, made her a coffee and left her calm and relieved.
“Tamara is a star, and one that changed the course of mum’s day.”
Former lab assistant Linda says she wishes she had joined the care sector years ago, and has clearly found her calling, based on her nomination.
“I would like to thank all of our carers for the attention and support we have received for the last 5 months but especially Linda Hall for the quality of her care and for the supportive relationship she built,” the nomination said.
“Her visits were always something to look forward to, she made so much difference. It is hard to imagine a more pleasant helpful or professional carer.”
Every one of our carers is a walking ambassador for our organisation, so it is great that the GEM awards allow service users the chance to let us know who are the brightest of the bunch. We thank you all, keep up the wonderful work.
