Training – From beginning of employment as a Carer

Phase 1

Two-week induction training

Including Principles of Care, Terms and Conditions of Employment, Risk Assessments, Moving and Handling, Medication, Safeguarding Adults and Children, First Aid, Mental Capacity and Harm Free Care. Shadowing of Experienced Carers and working with observations.

Phase 2

Evidenced Learning Part One,

Including medication refresher and on-job monitoring.

Evidenced Learning Part Two

Including Moving and Handling refresher.

Care Certificate completion

On-job monitoring, Food Hygiene and Infection Control.

Phase 3

Every One or Two Years

Moving and Handling Training (annually) and Medication (every 2 years) refreshed

Phase 4

Every Three Years

First Aid, Safeguarding Adults and Children, Mental Capacity Act, Harm free Care, Infection Control, Food Hygiene refreshed.

Phase 5

Every Five Years

Induction Refresher Completed

Additional Training Offered Includes:

Dementia Care, Palliative Care, Diplomas in Health and Social Care starting from Level 2, Distance Learning and various other relevant and requested topics including specialist training such as Parkinson’s and M.S.

Earn While You Train

All our training is free of charge and you’ll even be paid for the time it takes you to attend the course. We have two dedicated training suites where all our in-house training is delivered by our qualified Training Officer. These are fully equipped so that you can get hands on experience with the equipment you will be using in the community. All your training is delivered in person. This means you’ll be able to ask questions and get additional support if you need it. One to one specialist training can be provided if necessary. Throughout your employment you’ll be supported with extra training courses and our mentoring programme. This helps to ensure that you are up to date with the latest guidance, knowledge and techniques so you can feel confident that you are providing the best care at all times.

We understand that learning something new can be daunting at first, but don’t worry. We have created our training so it can be tailored around you. Your trainer will deliver it in a way that makes it fun and easy to understand. All your training is done face to face so your tutor will be able to help you and answer your questions as you go along.

Our training courses are flexible enough to be able to support people at all different stages of their learning, we understand that somebody new into care may require additional support as opposed to an experienced carer who has undertaken the work before.

We have a standard that all carers must meet before commencing lone working, we support everyone on an individual basis to ensure that they are confident and competent in their work and fully appreciate that the time it takes to reach this standard does vary on an individual basis. At Extra Hands we expect staff to continue learning throughout their time with us, as such we hold regular training sessions and refresher courses, and we will continue to support you with this learning by arranging courses at a time that is suitable to you and you will be paid for your attendance at these courses.
All care staff receive a comprehensive induction portfolio which acts as an excellent tool re-inforcing your learning as you are able to look up and make reference to topics you will have covered in your induction training. That along with your supervision and monitoring sessions ensures that you continue to meet the standards set by Extra Hands’.
