Our carer and mental health champion Tony Lasham was a recent guest on BBC Radio Norfolk’s breakfast show, talking about his huge career change.
Tony, of Fakenham, was an HGV driver before joining us almost 15 years ago and presenter Chris Goreham was keen to discover what had prompted the move into caring and whether he missed driving.
“I am always interested in speaking to people who have had a change of career,” said Chris (pictured below), and Tony certainly fits the bill.
The former trucker swapped the highway for his current role and he has never regretted the move.
“The rewards that you get from caring are unreal,” said Tony.
“I just wanted a complete career change and my wife and family said I would be good at caring,” he added.
“I am just too passionate about doing the care work to go back.”
He did admit to ‘missing the lads’ he worked with when he was driving lorries, but stressed he was staying put with us and was enjoying his more recent role as a Mental Health Champion.
“It’s something I thought would help other carers as well. People are afraid to admit they have a mental health issue, but a lot do and we also have lots of plans to help in the future,” he said.
The new mental health link is included in our company app which is on all company phones and Tony can arrange to speak with them in confidence.
The interview was a chance for Tony to catch-up with BBC presenter Chris Goreham as it was the second time he made the airwaves with the radio station. Previously he was on air during the pandemic after a local garage stepped-in and repaired his car heater for nothing. The mechanics were repairing his brakes but realised the heater wasn’t working, and fixed it for him.
